I've been told a lot of times. "Why bother buying a computer they become obsolete in 6 months anyway" This is great marketing by the computer makers. A better statement would be a computer isn't state of the art after 6 months. A desktop computer goes from top of the line to bottom of the line in about 6-9 months, but that doesn't mean it is obsolete. Just look at the system requirements of most software out there. over 90% of the new business software for a PC can run on a Pentium 166. A Pentium 166 was the lowest end computer you could really buy back around Jan 1998.
So Bottom line is you can get a computer that will be able to run the newest software for 3 1/2 years or spend twice as much or more and get one that will last 4 years.
There’s also another point. What if you don’t plan on keeping up with the latest business software? What if you set up a system that you like and works for you? There would really be no need to upgrade. There should really be no technical reason why a low priced computer you buy today couldn’t last more than 5 years. So instead of buying a $2500 computer that you won’t upgrade for 5 or 6 years why not buy a $500 computer that will last 5 years.
