Choosing the right Database

Compufleet uses Microsoft Access as a backend database. I've been told many times that Access isn't a real database and that it's not robust enough to handle a small or medium sized business.

Other larger databases are certainly more robust than Access but does that mean you need it? I have over 8 years Oracle experience and in my opinion it is a great database. It can handle many terrabytes of data, billions of rows and thousands of users. All of this comes at a price, If you want Oracle be ready to pay at least $15,000. Then you will need to have someone install it properly and keep it going. Now The runtime version of Access is included with Compufleet. If you want your own copy it will cost  about $200.

But I have a large company can Access handle all the data?

Soloutions Construction has run a benchmark test with Compufleet. We generated a company of 500 machines and fueled them every 3-5 days for 10 years. That came out to be well over 500,000 fuel entries. We then ran a fuel report for 10 years calculating MPG and total usage for each vehicle (Pretty much the worst we could think of). This report took 30 seconds top come up. A single vehicle report for the 10 year period takes less than a second.  Maintenance records and parts would be significantly less.

BOTTOM Line: If I were starting an IT department I would start with Access it's quick ansd easy to get started and it's inexpensive. Run it until it breaks. Then upsize (All enterprise databases have upsiozing tools to easily convert an Access database) to an enterprise database (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 ect) In the long run you will save thousands.

If you already have an enterprise database we can assist you in upsizing Compufleet and then running Compufleet in a client server environment against your enterprise database.
